What To Know Before Your Appointment

Medication

If possible (i.e. if symptoms allow), please stop taking any medications that inhibit stomach acid secretion (e.g. proton pump inhibitors (omeprazole, lansoprazole, esomeprazole) and H2- receptor antagonists (ranitidine, famotidine, nizsdine), one week before your appointment . If you cannot or do not wish to stop these medications, do not worry. If possible, 24 hours before please stop taking medications that neutralise acid secretion (e.g. antacids (gaviscon) and mucosa protection agents (sucralfate)), one day before your appointment.

Fasting Required (6 hours)

No food or drink, except water at least 6 hours before. Be sure to eat a light, healthy meal before you start your fast and avoid drinking alcohol.

Morning of Visit

Drink plenty of water so you are properly hydrated.

Protein Drink Required

Please note that in order to test for stimulated Gastrin-17 levels you will be required to drink a protein drink that contains lactose. This may cause symptoms in people with severe lactose intolerance and it is not suitable for persons who are hypersensitive/allergic to milk products. All other tests in the Digestive Health programme can be tested without consuming the protein drink. Please note if you are fasting for another test, this will disrupt your fast, as such please do not book any appointments later the same day which will require you to fast.

Expect the Visit to Last 60 Minutes

Each visit lasts about 40 minutes, though we recommend you give yourself a 60-minute window for check-in, wait times and more.

Blood Sample Required

The appointment will include a blood draw.  It is recommended to wear short or loose sleeves to make this easily accessible.

Stool Sample Required After Appointment

At your appointment you will also receive a bowel health at home test kit, which provides full instructions on how to collect your stool sample at home.
