Heparin-Binding EGF-Like Growth Factor (HB-EGF)

Heparin-binding EGF-like growth factor (HB-EGF) is one of several proteins that bind and activate the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). Once activated, EGFR triggers signalling pathways that control cell growth, proliferation and survival. HB-EGF is widely expressed and may play important roles in the repair and regeneration of tissues throughout the body, including the skin, liver and gastrointestinal tract.

Why Heparin-Binding EGF-Like Growth Factor (HB-EGF) matters

HB-EGF is a growth factor involved in regulating cell proliferation and tissue repair, and its expression may increase in response to tissue injury or damage. However, dysregulated HB-EGF signalling may lead to inappropriate activation of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), which has been implicated in cancer development. Elevated HB-EGF expression has been reported in some malignancies, including ovarian and breast cancers, where it may contribute to tumour growth and progression. These observations suggest that HB-EGF may have potential utility as a tumour biomarker.
