Transforming Growth Factor Alpha (TGF-α)

Transforming growth factor alpha (TGF-α) is a small protein belonging to the epidermal growth factor (EGF) family. It binds with high affinity to the EGF receptor (EGFR) and initiates multiple signalling pathways that regulate cell proliferation, survival, migration and differentiation. TGF-α expression is found in epithelial cells, such as those found in the skin and lining the gastrointestinal tract and may be increased by inflammation and during repair of damaged tissues.

Why Transforming Growth Factor Alpha (TGF-α) matters

TGF-α is a growth factor, a type of protein that helps to regulate cell growth and tissue repair. TGF-α may play a role in tumour development; therefore, high levels may be associated with cancer (e.g. liver, stomach and breast cancer). In addition, research suggests that TGF-α may be an important factor in promoting healing of damaged tissues within the gastrointestinal tract. For example, damage to the stomach from medications (e.g. aspirin) or H. pylori infection may be associated with increased TGF-α production.
