What is HPV (Human papillomavirus)?
HPV is a common virus affecting the mouth, throat, and genital area, and has over 200 different strains.
Around 80% of men and women will contract a strain of HPV at some point in their lifetime. HPV can be present for many years without causing issues, however it is linked to genital warts, cervical cancer, anal cancer, and penile cancer.
Why is an HPV vaccination important?
It is estimated that by age 27 most sexually active people will have been exposed to one of more strains of HPV, usually without their knowledge. As cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women aged under 45, HPV places unvaccinated women at a high degree of risk.
Men are also at risk with the virus being a cause of 80% of anal cancers. MSM (men who have sex with men) are at higher risk of contracting HPV and genital warts than heterosexual men.
The Gardasil 9 vaccination protects against 9 types of HPV including 6, 11, 16,18,31,33,45,52 and 58.
HPV vaccination can help to protect against certain strains of HPV which can lead to cervical cancer, genital cancers & genital warts and is recommended for women and men aged 45 and under.
