The liver is vital to long-term health and well-being, playing an important role in many bodily functions. A healthy liver can help to improve energy, mood, immunity, and even sleep.

Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is a common condition whereby fat builds up in the liver. The disease often has few or no symptoms but if untreated can lead to serious liver damage such as cirrhosis, liver cancer, diabetes, heart attack and stroke. Fatty liver disease is also estimated to be the most frequent cause of liver transplant by 2030.

Around 1 in 3 people in the UK are thought to have early-stage fatty liver disease where there are small amounts of fat in the liver. Risk factors include obesity, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, PCOS, an underactive thyroid, smoking, increasing age or high cholesterol.

The good news is, if non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is identified early, it is reversible. Eating a well-balanced healthy diet, increasing physical activity, stopping smoking, and losing weight if you need to can all make a difference. Although fatty liver disease isn't caused by alcohol, drinking alcohol may make the condition worse as such it is recommended to reduce alcohol intake or stop drinking altogether.
